Auguries of Innocence
To see a world in a grain of sand / And heaven in a wildflower
Hold infinity in the palm of your hand / And eternity in an hour.

There are thousands of manhole covers in every city, but we barely look at them, we hardly see their infinite variety of design. Made by existing or closed utility business firms, by known or long forgotten companies, they seal as a stamp a less known underground world, conveying in time the permanent human desire to create beauty.

I step on them every day and all I see are hundreds of unread letters sent in time to all of us. I keep asking myself what are those messages talking about, trying to understand what they are saying to me. They may speak about all the artists who created all the variety of patterns, can be a way to be inspired in adding a touch of industrial design in my own home, could be hidden messages interpreted through a faith in numerology … they can speak about the underground life that they hide from my sight. I wonder what message they can bring to someone?
